See also: finding us. We are located in Heasta, a village in South Skye, with spectacular views both out to the Island of Rùm, to the mainland mountains of Cnòideart (Knoydart) and to the mouth of Loch Shubhairne (Loch Hourn) on the west coast of Scotland. Our nearest small town is Broadford just four miles away. See our location in Google Maps and What3Words. Our address is: Skye Shepherd Huts, Heasta, Isle of Skye IV49 9BN.
Buidheag, our grand old lady
Which hut do I choose?
See also the Our Huts page for much more detail. In summary, Bothan Buidheag is set much further out into the field. It is nearest to the donkeys’ stable and has expansive views both towards the mainland mountains to the east, and to the south-west to the Island of Rùm out in the Atlantic. Parking is outside the house.
Bothan Beileag is the more easily accessible of the two huts and parking is right outside. Its bathroom is closer, located in the Big Shed. The hut overlooks the garden. In winter, you will be offered Bothan Beileag as it is more sheltered from the winter weather.
Can I get to Skye using public transport?
Yes you can, but you will need to hire a car to reach our village and to explore the island properly. The nearest train station is Kyle of Lochalsh (Caol Loch Aillse), around a 30-minute drive from us, via the Skye Bridge. Alternatively, travel by train from Glasgow to Mallaig on the mainland, and then cross the sea by the Mallaig ferry to Skye, arriving at Armadal (Armadale) on Skye. This is then around a 45-minute drive away from us.
How much deposit is required, and what happens if I cancel?
A non-refundable deposit equal to the cost of the first night’s stay is payable upon booking, with the remaining balance due no later than four weeks prior to the start of your stay. If you have concerns about needing to cancel then we strongly advise you to take out holiday insurance when booking.
What time is check-in and check-out?
Summer check-in is from 5 pm until 7 pm. Winter check-in is from 4 pm until 6 pm. If your journey is delayed please just let us know your approximate time of arrival. On your departure day, please leave by 10.30 am at the latest. This allows us time to thoroughly clean and prepare our shepherd huts for our next guests.
Are you dog-friendly?
Yes! We are pet-friendly. Bring your pooch or puss with you. Please get in touch if you want to bring more than two dogs, simply because there is limited space in a hut. If you are bringing your cat, talk to Janet in advance. We charge a small fee per pet per stay. Assistance dogs stay free of charge. Dogs must be on leads at all times because of livestock nearby. Throws for use on furniture and beds are provided and there is an outdoor doggie shower if your dogs get muddy. We allow dogs in all areas, but please check that other guests are happy with this arrangement. Thank you.
Where is the bathroom?
Each hut has its own private bathroom, just a short distance from the hut. The bathrooms each have power showers, electric heating, a flushing loo and a handbasin. One bathroom is inside the Big Shed and the other bathroom is right next to the Big Shed.
What happens about breakfast?
Should you choose, a breakfast basket for two is available to order when making your booking. We give you the basket at the beginning of your stay for you to prepare at a time that suits you each morning. Dietary alternatives are available, but please notify us at the time of booking. See breakfast basket details.
Guests who choose to provide their own breakfast may also use the kitchen in the Big Shed.
Is there Wi-Fi?
No, but there is good 4G reception with the ‘3’ and EE networks. SIM cards for these networks are available to buy in the supermarket in Broadford.
Are the huts accessible?
Both huts have three steps with a handrail leading up to a stable door.
Bothan Beileag has car parking adjacent to the hut, Bothan Buidheag has parking a short walk away. If you have additional needs, please contact us so we can discuss the suitability of our accommodation.
Can I hire both shepherd huts?
Yes, groups of up to four friends are welcome. Please be aware that no single beds are available.
Can we feed the donkeys?
Yes, however we ask guests to take great care of fingers when feeding the donkeys, and we will not be held responsible if you are bitten. Please only give them a carrot or an apple. We will be happy to stand with you while you feed the donkeys.
Do you allow smoking?
Smoking or vaping is strictly forbidden in all areas of Skye Shepherd Huts. We reserve the right to charge for additional cleaning should we find any evidence of smoking.
Can we bring children?
Our shepherd huts are only for guests aged 16 and over.
